Red tide set to linger till June: Fisheries Department
Kota Kinabalu: The red tide situation is expected to persist until June and the toxin levels will peak around March, according to State Fisheries Department Director Rayner Stuel Galid. He advised people to refrain from consuming any type of shellfish or bivalves immediately including oysters, mussels, cockles and any type of seafood with shells.
"In addition, people should refrain from collecting shellfish and bivalves from the sea areas with the intention to eat these or to sell to the general public as food," he said.
He said the mouse bioassay is the method for analysis of red tide toxin in shellfish by the Fisheries Department at its Fisheries Research Centre in Likas.
"Results are given as Mouse Unit (MU), where 400 MU is considered the lowest limit as the dangerous level for humans.
"Some of the shellfish samples taken to date have shown the levels to be as high as 6,900 MU (Putatan), 4,010 MU (Papar District) and 3,300 MU (Tuaran) and is considered as very toxic," he said.
He said red tide occurrences in Sabah in past years have revealed bivalves to be as toxic as 11,000 MU.
On another note, he said, only the Fisheries Department can detect the presence of this toxin in shellfish in its specialised lab; lay people cannot tell whether clams are toxic or not through sight, smell or taste.
"The toxin in these shellfish also cannot be washed away or got rid off through washing or through any type of food preparation or cooking," he added.
Meanwhile, State Health Director Dr Christina Rundi advised that the early symptoms of shellfish poisoning due to red tide include tingling of the lips and tongue, which may begin within minutes of eating poisonous shellfish or may take an hour or two to develop.
She said depending upon the amount of toxin a person has ingested, symptoms may progress to a sensation of "pricking of pins and needles" of the skin and then loss of control of arms and legs, followed by difficulty in breathing.
"If one experiences any of the above symptoms, get medical treatment immediately at the nearest hospital or clinic," she said, adding that delay in seeking treatment may result in death.
Safe for consumption
She said the type of sea life which are considered safe to eat are all types of prawns and crabs including shovel-nosed lobsters, mantis shrimps, all types of coral fishes and fishes which are predatory such as sharks and sting rays, barracuda, tenggeri, jacks and deep sea fishes.
However as a prudent measure, she said, consumers are advised to throw away the guts and gills of any fish to be eaten and these same fishes are to be washed properly.
"Also, any type of dried, canned, bottled or salted fish products are safe to be eaten," she added.

Smartphone price limit RM500 too low?
MCMC does not think so. It said in a statement:
“The idea is to spread the incentive across to those who do not yet use smartphones. We really want to help those who cannot afford to change phones to upgrade from their old 2G phones to a basic 3G smartphone. Those who can afford phones priced above RM500 are really not in the intended category or target market. Some of those phones can reach prices of over RM2,500 without contract. A RM200 rebate does not even make a dent but if the phone is priced at RM500, a RM200 rebate goes a long way.”

Stars align for Kristen Stewart in quiet corner of film universe
Within minutes, the actress kicks off her heels and sits cross-legged on her chair, getting comfortable to talk about the good moment in her career, a very different time from her blockbuster “Twilight” years.
Stewart has earned acclaim for her supporting roles in two art-house films: as the daughter of a woman (Julianne Moore) suffering from early onset Alzheimer’s in “Still Alice,” opening in Los Angeles and New York this weekend; and the assistant to an aging movie star (Juliette Binoche) in “Clouds of Sils Maria,” a Cannes Film Festival favorite out in U.S. theaters this spring.
“I am thrilled. I love movies. I don’t have those nagging, regretful feelings about either of them,” Stewart said.
“It is a miracle,” she added. “Jesus, when the stars align and you are allowed to feel that way, it is why movies are made. It is why they affect people.”
Critics have taken note of what the former child actress and teen phenomenon is showing the world at 24 years of age. Variety’s Peter Debruge called her “the most compellingly watchable American actress of her generation” and A.O. Scott at the New York Times said her more recent roles “should help re-establish her as an insightful and unpredictable talent.”
‘LIKE BEING HIRED’
Stewart has known Moore since she was 12 and took on “Still Alice” because she knew Moore would deliver on the difficult role. As it happens, Moore is now the overwhelming favorite to win the best actress Oscar this year for her role as Alice.
“Her capability is astounding and motivating as all hell,” said Stewart. “I get on a set with her – and I have been acting since I was 9 – whoa, I am not there yet. I am striving; I am trying.”

“The movie is supposed to show how you deal with what you still have and you focus on what you retain rather than what you have lost,” said Stewart.
Raised in Los Angeles by parents who work in film and television, Stewart “idolizes this industry” and would love to do big franchise movies again and even be a Marvel superhero.
Looking back at her years as Bella, the lovestruck teenager entangled in a forbidden romance with a vampire in the “Twilight” movies, Stewart is nostalgic.
“I felt into it. I loved it,” she said, adding, “I got into that for absolutely the right reasons. There was never any regret.”
People in the industry have pushed her to go find stories she wants to do and start a production company to have more power over her roles. But she’s not ready for that yet.
“I like being hired,” she said. “I like the feeling of having no control over something.”
