JPJ officers nabbed for smuggling out road tax stickers and issuing forged grants for cloned cars

We recently read about the Road Transport Department (JPJ) busting cloned car syndicates and devising new systems to stop people from selling cloned cars. Now, the Negeri Sembilan Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained JPJ insiders for aiding the cloned car trade.

Bernama reports that over 10,000 blank road tax stickers were smuggled out of JPJ in Negeri Sembilan between November 2014 and March 2015. The state MACC also discovered that 1,500 car grants had been issued without authorisation, for cloned and smuggled cars.

Two JPJ officers were among four individuals detained by MACC in separate Ops Photostatraids last week. The three men and one woman, aged between their early 20s and 30s, included middlemen. Investigations revealed that the syndicate had sold the original road tax stickers for between RM450 and RM800 each, and forged car grants for up to RM1,200 each.

The state’s MACC director Shaharom Nizam Abd Manap confirmed the report. He added that investigations were continuing, and urged owners of cloned cars to surrender their vehicles voluntarily to the MACC’s office to avoid action. To date, 16 smuggled vehicles (believed to be scrap cars from a neighbouring country) have been seized and 11 suspects arrested in operations conducted last month.

2015 Ford Mondeo launched in Malaysia – RM198k

The 2015 Ford Mondeo EcoBoost has been officially introduced in Malaysia – the fifth-gen CD391 (known as the Fusion in the United States) was previewed last month in a series of roadshows, but is now available to view at all Ford showrooms nationwide.

There’s not much we don’t already know about the fully-imported D-segment sedan, which is assembled in Spain at Ford’s Valencia plant. Initial details of the Malaysian car, which mirrors the Australian mid-level Trend variantin terms of equipment (with a few elements from the high-end Titanium spec thrown in) were offered back in March, and provisional specs were revealed later that same month.

Then, full details of the Malaysian spec-car Mondeo came about last month, when the 1,562 kg offering began its preview rounds. Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, keyless entry/push button ignition, dual-zone auto climate control, fog lamps and 10-way powered front seats.

There are also auto headlamps/wipers, front and rear parking aid sensors, an electronic parking brake, leather steering wheel/gear shift knob as well as paddle shifters and rear air-con vents. There’s also MyKey, which allows the programming of various features such as setting the maximum speed limit, a seatbelt reminder and the maximum volume of the audio system.

The Mondeo comes equipped with a SYNC 2 infotainment system with an eight-inch LCD touchscreen and rear-view camera, and the accompanying Sony audio system features nine speakers, Bluetooth connectivity, USB and aux inputs as well as Voice Command for phone, music and climate controls. No navigation though.

It’s powered by the 2.0 litre EcoBoost engine carried over from the previous fourth-gen CD345 Mondeo, which was of course sold here (first in its 203 PS form). As such, you get the same 240 PS at 5,300 rpm and 345 Nm at 2,300 to 4,900 rpm state of output tune as found previously.

The transmission is different now though. The six-speed PowerShift in the old car, which was the wet clutch Getrag 6DCT450, has been replaced by a conventional six-speed torque converter unit, the GM-Ford 6F35 SelectShift. The unit is also seen in the Ford Kuga.

Exterior kit includes adaptive LED headlamps, daytime running lights, dual exhausts and auto fold wing mirrors, complete with puddle lamps. The Malaysian Mondeo wears 17-inch double five-spoke alloys wrapped with 235/50 tyres (Michelin Primacy 3s on the preview units), which arguably looks a bit small on the car.

As for safety equipment, the list reads as such – ABS, EBD, ESC, traction control, hill launch assist and Isofix mount points as well as seven airbags (front, thorax, curtain and driver knee).

Curiously, as pointed out by an eagle-eyed reader, the inflatable rear seatbelts that are standard fit on the Australian Mondeo were seen on one of the preview drive cars – it’s not regulation kit on the Malaysian car, so it might be a case of those rare ‘just comes with them’ samples popping up.

Our Mondeo comes equipped with Lane Keeping Alert + Aid, but LKA is the only item in the arsenal of Safety Pack items to feature here – no BLIS and lane departure warning, nor is there the Active City Stop, enhanced Active Park Assist or Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection seen on higher-spec Australian models.

Four exterior colours are available for the new Mondeo, and they are Tectonic Silver, Frozen White, Panther Black and Ruby Red. As for pricing, the 2015 Ford Mondeo EcoBoost goes for RM198,000 on-the-road without insurance (RM203,771 with insurance, identical to the estimated RM203,800 price bandied initially). The CBU offering comes with a three-year/100,000 km warranty as well as a three year/60,000 km free service package.

Match against EPL club not a 'circus' match - FAM

FAM added that even though the match against the EPL club would not bring any points in world rankings, it is important for Harimau Malaya squad coach, Dollah Salleh (centre) to assess the capability of new players.

KUALA LUMPUR: The match between a Malaysian Selection and English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspurs FC at the Shah Alam Stadium on May 27, is part of exposure for the National squad in preparation for two 2019
Asian Cup qualifying rounds.

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) in a statement said the match against the English Premier League (EPL) club is the best platform for the national squad before facing Timor Leste on June 11 and Palestine on June 16 at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil to collect maximum points.

"The Malaysian selection will meet Tottenham Hotspurs FC and play a friendly match against Hong Kong on June 6 which is an opportunity for Malaysian players to battle against a quality side in tactical and physical aspects," the statement said.

FAM added that even though the match against the EPL club would not bring any points in world rankings, it is important for Harimau Malaya squad coach, Dollah Salleh to assess the capability of new players.

FAM also said the match would not have any limit on the change of players compared to an 'A' category friendly match which limit a maximum change of six players.

In this regard, FAM does not want the friendly match to be labeled as a circus game by a handful of fans as five import players in the Malaysian League will be fielded to boost the strength of the national squad.

"Dollah is expected to field the strongest lineup against the Hong Kong national squad which is categorised as an 'A' level match which will in turn contribute points toward the ranking of the national squad," the statement added.

Over 1,000 flee as typhoon threatens northern Philippines

MANILA: More than 1,000 people were evacuated from their homes as Typhoon Noul approached the northern Philippines, threatening flash floods, landslides and tsunami-like storm surges, government agencies warned on Sunday.

The storm's movement has slowed slightly but it has also strengthened to pack gusts of 205 kilometres (127 miles) per hour and is still expected to hit the northern edge of the main island of Luzon by Sunday afternoon or evening, according to Esperanza Cayanan, chief of the government's weather monitoring division.

As of Sunday morning, it was about 140 kilometres northeast of the northern province of Cagayan, which is expected to feel the brunt of the typhoon's fury later in the day, she added.

Over 1,200 people have already been pre-emptively evacuated from the areas expected to be affected by Noul, said Mina Marasigan, spokeswoman for the government's national disaster monitoring council.

"There are areas which can have landslides. There are areas which can have flash floods. There are coastal areas which can be hit by storm surges as high as 1.5 metres (five feet)," she told AFP.

Storm surges -- tsunami-like waves generated by powerful typhoons -- have become a major concern during storms.

In November 2013 storm surges were the main killers as Super Typhoon Haiyan ravaged the central Philippines, leaving more than 7,350 people dead or missing.

Several hundred people living in a farming hamlet below the restive Bulusan volcano on Luzon have also been evacuated due to the potential that rain could mix with volcanic ash accumulated on the volcano's slopes to form deadly, fast-moving mudflows that could bury entire houses.

The government has already suspended ferry services in the affected areas and some domestic flights have also been cancelled as part of safety measures.

About 20 typhoons and storms hit the Philippines each year, many of them deadly.

The movie world gears up for Cannes

CANNES: The Cannes Film Festival will next week lift the curtain on 12 days of glamour, movies, deals and parties drawing the elite of the cinema world, from Hollywood honchos to arthouse auteurs.

Under the Riviera sun -- and high security -- some of the industry's biggest stars, directors and producers will be turning out to tread the red carpet during the May 13-24 event.

Cate Blanchett, Matthew McConaughey, Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Colin Farrell, Michael Caine, Jane Fonda, Salma Hayek, Gerard Depardieu, Catherine Deneuve, Rachel Weisz, Jesse Eisenberg, Naomi Watts and Rooney Mara all feature in this year's movie line-up and can be expected to appear to promote their films.

The Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan, will definitely be there, as co-presidents of the jury that decides the festival's prestigious Palme d'Or prize. Other jury members include actors Jake Gyllenhaal, Sienna Miller and Sophie Marceau.

'Mad Max: Fury Road'

The movies in competition range from Hollywood-style fare, in the form of "Sicario", about a CIA operation to bring down a Mexican drug lord, to Asian martial arts in "The Assassin", to a Hungarian take on the Holocaust in "Son of Saul".

Some out-of-competition projections, though, are more widely anticipated.

Among them is "Mad Max: Fury Road", a sci-fi dystopian desert-carnage reboot of the franchise that made Mel Gibson famous, but which now stars British actor Tom Hardy.

Woody Allen's latest, "Irrational Man", is also awaited, as are the big budget animations "The Little Prince" and "Inside Out", and Israeli-US actress Natalie Portman's directorial debut, "A Tale of Love and Darkness".

Gaspar Noe, an Argentine director who relishes shock cinema, will be showing his movie "Love" -- suggested to be heavily pornographic, based on a movie poster he released online -- in a midnight screening.

"Amy", a documentary about British singer Amy Winehouse who died of alcohol poisoning in 2011 aged 27, will also be getting an out-of-competition midnight projection. Her family have condemned the film as "misleading" and disassociated themselves from it.

English becomes language of movies

This year, Europe easily dominates the competition field, accounting for 11 of the 19 movies vying for the golden Palme. Most of those are from a new generation of filmmakers in France and Italy.

But perhaps one of the most telling changes seen in the Cannes entries is the predominance of English.

The global lingua franca is used in several of the productions, either as a way of reaching a broader audience or to adapt to international casts, blurring the national origins of some movies.

Two of the three Italian entries, "Youth" and "The Tale of Tales", are in English, as are the sole Greek- and Norwegian-directed movies in competition, "The Lobster" and "Louder Than Bombs".

Ironically, though, not a single British movie is on this year's list, although Cannes festival director Thierry Fremaux said "Macbeth" -- a retelling of Shakespeare's tragedy directed by an Australian but starring German-Irish actor Michael Fassbender and French actress Marion Cotillard and filmed in Britain -- effectively stood in for the UK.

Deals and parties

For all of the hype surrounding the Cannes movie screenings, a lot of other activity will be going on at the festival through its market section, where backstage production deals and executive conferences are held and valuable contacts made.

A talk by Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos on May 15 will be a filled to capacity. The US film and TV streaming company is one of the new big players shaking up the cinema industry with its programming and unorthodox distribution.

There is also Cannes's frenzied party scene. Every night sees bashes big and small invest the shore and back-country millionaires' villas.

One of the highest profile will be the annual Amfar soiree to raise funds for AIDS research. Sharon Stone will host the event with Natalie Portman and the Coen brothers, while Gyllenhaal, Milla Jovovich, Diane Kruger, Isabella Rossellini and Formula One racing champion Lewis Hamilton will attend.

Man United close on Champions League, Burnley relegated

LONDON: Manchester United moved to the brink of Champions League qualification with a 2-1 win at Crystal Palace on Saturday, while Burnley's relegation from the Premier League was confirmed.

Juan Mata put United ahead with a 19th-minute penalty after Scott Dann was adjudged to have handled the ball, before Luke Shaw, who took a blow to the face, and Wayne Rooney, who appeared to hurt his thigh, were forced off.

Jason Puncheon equalised with a 57th-minute free-kick that nicked off Daley Blind, but 12 minutes from time Palace goalkeeper Julian Speroni got caught beneath Ashley Young's left-wing cross and Marouane Fellaini headed in the winner.

"It was very important to win this match and it is a right step to qualification for the Champions League," United manager Louis van Gaal told Sky Sports.

"We had injuries, we had to change and the team was out of balance with Phil Jones at left-back and Wayne Rooney, our attacking point, going off. We have showed what you can achieve as a team and we have achieved our victory."

The victory took United seven points clear of fifth-place Liverpool, who will be unable to overhaul Van Gaal's side if they lose at freshly crowned champions Chelsea on Sunday.

Even if Liverpool do prevail at Stamford Bridge, United will need only three points from their final two games at home to Arsenal and away at Hull City to rubber-stamp a top-four finish.

While United ended a run of three straight defeats, they were once again indebted to goalkeeper David de Gea, who produced a pair of stunning point-blank saves to thwart Glenn Murray either side of Fellaini's winner.

Burnley were relegated despite winning 1-0 at fellow strugglers Hull, which left them seven points from safety with only two games remaining.

Promoted from the Championship last season, Burnley gave themselves hope of avoiding the drop by stunning defending champions Manchester City 1-0 in March, but they subsequently went six games without winning, losing five.

Danny Ings stopped the rot with a 62nd-minute winner at the KC Stadium, crashing home left-footed after Hull failed to clear a corner to end a 1,036-minute goal drought for Sean Dyche's side, but it was to no avail.

"We did what we had to do today, but we have not done it enough over the course of the season," said Burnley manager Dyche. "Of course relegation is disappointing, but I believe we're in decent shape to bounce straight back."

Mahrez prolongs Leicester surge

The result dragged Hull into the relegation zone and left Steve Bruce's side two points from safety ahead of their thorny final fixtures away to Tottenham Hotspur and at home to United.

Burnley went down despite moving above Queens Park Rangers, who are on the brink of slipping into the second tier as they are nine points adrift of safety ahead of their trip to Manchester City on Sunday.

Wrong people are concerned with the issue of 1MDB, TH?

Political Science Lecturer Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Associate Professor Datuk Dr Mohammad Agus Yusoff

SHAH ALAM - Political analysts view that the concern of the people of Malaysia to issue 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and TH (TH) is that they love the country and the economy are concerned.

Political Science Lecturer Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Associate Professor Datuk Dr Agus Yusoff said the criticism and attacks the people on the issue is not caused to topple the government.

Instead, he said, people want to get a concrete answer from the government, with government guarantees regarding the current economic situation.

"I find that people complain because they do not get a response to the issues raised, but reason alone. Hard to remember to give answers that can convince the people? "He said in his Facebook.

Elaborating, he said, many economic issues that arise now so annoy people, including issues concerning the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

"About GST, people also do not get upset if the same implementation as described by the government. The Government states GST will not burden the people because the price of basic necessities is rising; GST only for the rich; SST GST tax decrease of 10 + 6 percent to just 6 percent.

"In reality, when implemented rising prices of essential goods. Hatta, the price of the prepaid cards that are guaranteed not to increase any GST. The government promised to solve this problem with the telco prepaid card, but until now there has been no announcement about the settlement, "he said.

She said, when prices need to rise, people get angry and demanded an explanation, then people blamed anyway.

"When people complain, get out the fact the people are not grateful; the opposition took advantage and more. The issue of people have been turned into a party political issue. Why is that?

"Looking back, I think we were fairly reflect the deadlock Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin," he said.

Earlier, Muhyiddin was speaking in Milan on issues 1MDB said, answering his own dead-end issue.

Man United close in on Champions League with a 2-1 win at Palace

Premier League, Selhurst Park - Crystal Palace 1 (Puncheon 57) Manchester United 2 (Mata 19 pen, Fellaini 78)

Marouane Fellaini took advantage of a goalkeeping howler as Manchester United overcame a wobble to win 2-1 at Crystal Palace and close in on Champions League qualification.

The Belgian midfielder guided into an empty net 12 minutes from time after Julian Speroni failed to deal with Ashley Young's cross.

Jason Puncheon had come off the bench to level with a deflected free kick for the Eagles following Juan Mata's first-half opener from the spot.

The Red Devils had missed their previous two penalties and had not scored in three matches until the Spaniard coolly converted from 12 yards after Scott Dann was adjudged to have handled Young's centre.

The result means United end a run of three straight defeats and are now seven points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool. They will qualify for next season's Champions League if the Merseysiders lose at champions Chelsea on Sunday.

Van Gaal had been deprived of Angel Di Maria (training injury) and Robin van Persie (virus) in the lead up to the game and they suffered more woe when Luke Shaw was carried off on a stretcher following a first-half head injury. Wayne Rooney also picked up a knock and did not return for a barnstorming second period which saw David De Gea produce two astonishing saves to keep out Glenn Murray as Palace pressed.

The impressive Puncheon also had a big penalty shout turned down when Mata appeared to clip him in the area but the Eagles could not snare the second equaliser their performance probably deserved and they were left to lament Speroni's moment of madness.

6 things you didn't know about Mother's Day

Fun facts about Mother's Day
Like all countries around the globe, the celebration to show appreciation to the woman who had sacrificed her entire life for the sake of her children's happiness is celebrated on the second Sunday of May.

This is a time to rejoice: every child regardless of age will rush to a gift store to buy memorable gifts for their mothers.

But did you know the facts behind Mother's Day celebration?

Here are six things you probably didn’t know about Mother's Day.

1. Creator of Mother's Day had no child.

Anna Jarvis, the creator of Mother's Day never had children herself. However, her mother, Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis, had 13 children.

2. The origins of Mother's Day date back to the Civil War.

Mrs. Anna Jarvis was the founder of Mother's Day Work Club, who brought all mothers together in America to raise current issues to the public.

During her career in this club, Jarvis contributed an idea of announcing a national holiday in conjunction with Mother's Day.

3. Mother's Day was first celebrated on May 10, 1908 in memory of Anna Jarvis.

Three years after her mother, Anna Jarvis passed away; she hosted a function to honour her mother and all mothers.

4. The date was later revised by President Woodrow Wilson.

Although the date of 10 May was announced by Jarvis, President Woodrow Wilson later decided that Mother's Day should fall on the second Sunday of May each year, regardless of the date.

5. Mother's Day was spread throughout the world

According to a source, Jarvis wrote to many politicians and businessmen across the globe to promote national holidays in conjunction with Mother's Day celebration. With such efforts, Mother's Day was later celebrated in Africa, South America and Asia.

6. Ironically, the founder was against the commercialisation of Mother's Day glorification.

According to Jarvis, she was not affectionate with the greeting cards and flower bouquets, as it eliminates the original message of the holiday. According to the Malcolm Forbes's book titled "Women Who Made a Difference" Jarvis said,

“A printed card means nothing except that you are too lazy to write to the woman who has done more for you than anyone in the world. And candy! You then eat most of it yourself. A pretty sentiment."
