GEORGE TOWN: A drive rice famous restaurant in Bukit Jambul today raided the Enforcement Division of the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs (Ministry) Penang because of selling bread rolled eggs at RM2.50.
Deputy ministry's state enforcement chief Chin Ching Chung said the inspection was carried out at 10:40 am after the department received complaints of users said the price of bread rolled egg before the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) is RM1.80.
"Traders were given three days to submit relevant documents and state their reason to raise the price before enforcement action is taken," he said.
He said that if employers failed to submit reasons for the increase was within the prescribed period, they can be penalized under Section 21 Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011.
"If operators were found to be excessive profit margin, they could be charged under Section 14 of the same Act," he said.
Chin said further investigation revealed that the price of bread rolled eggs at the restaurant was changed several times before April, from RM1.80 to RM2.20 and RM2.50 after latest into GST.
The survey found that the price tag on the menu using a simple adhesive amended finds the price of bread rolled egg ever sold at prices as low as RM1.60.
He said it would continue to monitor the prices from time to time to ensure that consumers do not become victims of greed handful of traders who take advantage of the GST to raise the price of goods as they please.
