24-hour restaurant operations remain - Najib

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has decided to maintain the operation of restaurants and eateries to 24 hours to provide comfort and convenience to the public, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said the decision was also made to avoid concerns among traders that the government restrict business hours.

"The situation prevailing today seems to provide comfort and convenience to the public, and those who already have provision business to be received by them.

"If we restrict opening hours, it will cause a lot of inconvenience to the public," he told reporters at the main mosque of Kampung Baru, here, today.

Previously, the newspaper reported the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim as saying that the meeting of the National Social Council (NSC) will discuss the proposal to limit shop opening hours until 12 midnight meal as a measure to curb social ills.

He said he also received a mixed reaction from the public on the matter, which makes the government decided to maintain the opening of restaurants and eateries concerned.

Meanwhile, Najib said the congregation Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru viewed satisfied with the reconstruction of the mosque, which cost more than RM20 million were borne by Yayasan 1Malaysia Development Bhd.

"I've worship twice (at Masjid Jamek) with the congregation, the situation is much different ... more beautiful, comfortable, more spacious, more mosques would be (in order) air conditioning in the little time left," he said.

According to the prime minister, he aims to make the mosque as a milestone in the redevelopment of Kampung Baru, which is now in the pipeline.

Earlier, Najib Asr prayers at the mosque before distributing about 1,200 packets of porridge, his personal contribution to the public in the courtyard of the mosque.
