Student, 16, beaten to death over towel incident

KOTA BHARU: A vocational college student in Bachok died after he was believed to have been beaten up by a senior student in the college hostel over a misunderstanding.

In the incident around midnight last night, the victim, Mohamad Nur Akram Zime, 16, was allegedly kicked by the 17-year-old senior, believed to due to former putting his towel over the headboard of the suspect's bed.

The victim's father, Zime Yakoob, said based on eyewitness' accounts, his son was said to have been kicked twice -- in the neck and body.

The victim before this was studying at Sekolah Menengah Sains Tengku Abdulllah in Raub, Pahang before being transferred to the vocational college three months ago so he could be nearer to his family.

Zime said, he last saw his son, who was the fourth of seven siblings, just last week.

The victim's elder brother, Mohd Nor Aminuddin, said Mohamad Nur Akram was an easygoing person and was not problematic.

"He's a little shy around people, but he likes to help. The last I saw him was on Labour Day," said Mohd Nor Aminuddin.

Mohamad Nur Akram's body was first sent to the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital's forensics unit for post-mortem before it was taken to Wakaf Berangan cemetery in Pasir Puteh for burial.

Meanwhile, Kelantan police chief Datuk Mazlan Lazim, said the victim had died of severe injuries on the right of the neck after being hit by a strong blow.

"The victim was given cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before being sent to a health clinic in Bachok where he was pronounced dead at 1.30am this morning," he was quoted by Bernama as saying.

"The victim's blood flow to the brain was severed as a result of a fatal kick by the suspect who is believed to have self-defence skills such as silat or tomoi," he reportedly said.

Mazlan said the suspect, who hails from Melor here, was detained by police at 12.30pm.

He said police considered the case as solved with the arrest of the suspect, adding that the suspect will be remanded tomorrow.

The case is investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder which carries the mandatory death penalty if convicted.
