5 family hostage for six hours

Melaka - Police managed to rescue five family members who were taken hostage after more than six hours of talks and tried to calm a man armed with machetes in rage incident at a house in Taman Indah Duyong here, early this morning.

Melaka police chief Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye said the incident was a man in his 30s has made her 40s; 60's biological mother; and three daughters, aged between three and nine years as a ransom believed to be from disgruntled with his wife and his mother.

Police received a report on the incident at about 7.15pm and rushed to the scene to rescue the hostages, he told reporters here today.

He said police tried to negotiate asking him to surrender but was unsuccessful because she was in a state of very angry with his mother and his wife, who he claimed had practiced magic against him.

"The police can not take action earlier because the suspects were armed with machetes and using weapons to threaten members of his family.

"The police had to act raided the place and managed to save all the hostages and arrested the suspect at around 2 am after a suspect is increasingly aggressive towards the wives, mothers and children," he said.

Chuah said all hostages are taken into Melaka Hospital for treatment.

The man's wife was injured in the face and eyes allegedly was beaten while investigations were carried out to determine whether the mother and her children suffered injuries.

Commenting further on the negotiations over six hours with the suspect, he said, the police are trying not to use violence or a weapon otherwise in negotiations led by Deputy Police Chief Melaka, Senior Assistant Commissioner Mohd Shahrizan Che Mat Din over the hostages safety factor.

He said police would conduct a thorough investigation on the incident, including the background of the suspects who are believed not to have a job.

"It is too early to draw any conclusions about the suspects, including whether he is an addict or under the influence of drugs when acting detain family members hostage and aggressive," he said.

Meanwhile, a neighbor who called the police suspect to inform the incident, said the suspect was a hot-tempered and often acted hitting family members.

"We often heard screams and saw him (the suspect) hit his family, especially his wife. More significantly in recent days because of fighting between them lasted from early morning till night," the man said.

He said the incident happened on the day of the rampage, the suspect initially pulled his wife out of the house and act to solve a neighboring vehicle at about 7pm.

He said the suspects then went into the house and locked himself and his family members in the house that has been inhabited for about seven years ago that caused him to call the police for fear of their safety.
