Eight died in a helicopter crash in Nepal

KATHMANDU -NEPAL. All six official United States Marine (US) and two members of the Nepal Army was killed when a US Air Force helicopter carrying them crashed near here.

Fragments of wreckage of the helicopter UH-1Y Huey was found scattered at an altitude of 11,200 feet in the northeast Kalinchok hills, about 50 kilometers (km) east of Kathmandu and all found dead, said Major General Binoj Basnyat of Nepal Army.

US military helicopter wreckage was found at the crash site nearly 68 hours after the aircraft was reported missing.

After receiving information from the local population, Nepal Army commissioned a Lancer and Ecureuil helicopters to the crash.

"Immediately after the crash detected, the five members of the Nepal Army arrived in the region but bad weather and high winds prevented them from removing the bodies of the victims were burnt to death," said Basnyat.

US military helicopter was reported missing on Tuesday than Dolkha during a humanitarian mission to rescue victims of the earthquake in that country.

The exact cause of the crash is not yet known, but initial reports indicated it might be due to human error.

However, Basnyat declined to comment but said "it will only be identified after the investigation."

The earthquake that rocked Nepal on 25 April and 12 May this year have killed at least 8,500 people and injured more than 15,000 people destroying property worth billions of dollars.

The United States has sent a team of soldiers to assist Nepal in rescue operations.
